Tours on Gran Paradiso

When?: from June to September
my first 4000m, the normal route
Gran Paradiso is the only peak of 4000m totally in Italian territory. Its climbing is the best for the excursionist who wants to have a first experience in ice and high mountain using traction cleats and admiring the gorgeous and suggestive panoramas of Valle d’Aosta.
It’s a good way to prepare ourselves for the ascending of Monte Bianco.

North Face of Gran Paradiso
The North Side of Gran Paradiso is legendary, it’s composed by an icy ramp with a difference in altitude of almost 600 m. It’s also the most difficult side to climb of the mountain.
This climbing in ice is one of the more classic in Alps and can’t miss in the currilum of any alpinist.

Difficulties and duration might change depending on the condition of ice. From the last crevasse the slope continues for almost 400 m with a stable declivity from 50° to 55°. The descending is made through the Normal Route.
From Rifugio Chabot we start climbing a moraine ridge to reach the glacier and following the normal route. After 2 hours (reached altitude 3300 m) arrived at Sperone NW we left the normal route climbing on the left side traversing the side going up to the last crevasse. We then continue with a stable declivity (45/50°) with some steeper tracts (max 55°) reaching the crest. It’s a panoramic crest that leads to the Madonna at the top of the mountain.

Travers of Piccolo and Gran Paradiso
It’s a technical and thrilling traverse. One of the most beautiful and hardest route to the top of Gran Paradiso (4.061 m). This traverse in altitude is full of emotions made by sharped crests, slopes of ice and snow, abseiling and climbing in rocks.
It’s a good way to prepare ourselves for the ascending of Cervino.
Info
Program:
1° day: ascending to Chabot Refuge (almost 2,5 ore). Dinner and overnight.
2° day: from Chabot refuge we follow the path to Becca di Montandayné. Reached its glacier we then move to Montandayné pass (3.723 m) passing through slopes of ice and snow (400 m / 45° max), after the last crevasse in the left side we move to the pass climbing more difficult declivities. Up to the top of the first “tower” (Punta Vaccarone) we move though a snowy crest to circumvent the other towers with their difficulties remaining in Cogne’s side. In this passage we might use some abseiling.
From the peak we descend climbing snow and rocks to the pass of Piccolo Paradiso. From there, following the snowy crest, we arrive to the way out of the north side and rapidly to the top of Gran Paradiso (4.061 m). We’ll descend through the Normal Route.
