What is the Selvaggio Blu?

The Selvaggio Blu is considered one of the most demanding and fascinating treks in Italy—and all of Europe.
Spanning over 50 km, this wild route follows ancient shepherd paths, charcoal mule tracks, and climbing sections along the stunning coastline of the Gulf of Orosei.
Created in the 1980s by mountaineers Mario Verin and Peppino Cicalò, this itinerary takes you from Pedra Longa to Cala Sisine, passing some of Sardinia’s most iconic coves: Cala Goloritzé, Cala Mariolu, and Cala Biriola.

Why Choose This Trek?

  • Certified UIAGM Mountain Guide with over 10 years of experience on the route

  • Safe management of rope descents and exposed sections

  • Optional “Selvaggio Blu Extreme” route variations for experienced hikers

  • Authentic encounters with Sardinia’s last active shepherd huts

  • Exclusive route via the “Su Ledere ‘e Goloritzé” via ferrata with stunning sea views

A Trek for True Mountain Enthusiasts

The Selvaggio Blu is not for everyone.
It requires good physical condition, familiarity with technical terrain, and mandatory guidance from a certified Mountain Guide to navigate alpine sections and rope passages safely.

If you’re looking for an off-the-grid trek, close to home yet deeply connected with nature, and want to experience a raw and intense adventure, this is the journey for you.

Our Approach: Authentic Experience, Simplicity, and Nature

Our itinerary follows the classic route, enhanced by the “sea view” variation of the new Goloritzé via ferrata (Su Ledere ‘e Goloritzé), connecting Cala Goloritzé to Cala Mariolu.
We’ll stop at the last active shepherd huts along the coast, where locals like Zio Battista, Paolo, Salvatore, and Laura will welcome us with heartfelt stories, local products, and genuine hospitality.

This is not just a trek: it’s a full immersion into a timeless world, where nature, history, and adventure blend into an unforgettable week.

Daily Itinerary – Selvaggio Blu Trek

Day 1: Arrival in Santa Maria Navarrese
Travel to Santa Maria Navarrese, check into a comfortable B&B, and enjoy a welcome dinner.

Day 2: Santa Maria Navarrese – Cuile Us’Piggius

  • Distance: ~12 km

  • Elevation gain: 1000 m

  • Duration: 6–7 hours

We begin the trek along a coastal path from Santa Maria Navarrese. After crossing the Forrola plain and reaching the base of the Aguglia di Pedralonga, we ascend along a scenic ledge to Punta Giradili. A short climb via the Iscala Sos Oggiatros ferrata takes us to the summit, where stunning views await. We then descend to a 700 m plateau for our first overnight stay at Cuile Us’Piggius, with a traditional Sardinian dinner.

Day 3: Cuile Us’Piggius – Punta Salinas

  • Distance: ~14 km

  • Elevation gain: 1000 m

  • Duration: 8–9 hours

We traverse the slopes of Monte Ginnirco, surrounded by junipers and sheer cliffs. A short climb at Bacu Tenadili leads us to Portu Pedrosu cove, perfect for a swim. The trail continues to Porto Quau and then up to Ovile Piras, where Salvatore welcomes us for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Punta Salinas – Cala Mariolu – Mudaloru

  • Distance: ~10 km

  • Elevation gain: 900 m

  • Duration: 7–8 hours

One of the most exciting stages of the trek. We depart from Punta Salinas toward UNESCO-listed Cala Goloritzé. The route includes the exposed but secure Su Ledere ‘e Goloritzé via ferrata, offering breathtaking views en route to Cala Mariolu. From here, we continue on rocky trails to Mudaloru, our sea-view bivouac. If sea conditions prevent boat transport, we’ll carry sleeping bags and mats with us.

Day 5: Mudaloru – Ololbizzi

  • Distance: ~7 km

  • Elevation gain: 800 m

  • Duration: ~8 hours

We begin with the iconic “Cat’s Step,” then climb to the Porta di Urele, tackling exposed passages and rope descents—some in a caving style. After reaching the Grotta del Fico, we complete more technical sections and arrive at our bivouac in Ololbizzi. Dinner and overnight on this atmospheric plateau.

Day 6: Ololbizzi – Cala Sisine

  • Distance: ~8 km

  • Elevation gain: 600 m

  • Duration: 7 hours

The grand finale! We follow a mule track to Cuile Piddi, then descend a hidden passage (Sa Nurca) followed by a long rope descent. After a refreshing swim at Cala Biriala, we continue through the forests of Biriola and Oronnoro beneath massive cliffs. The final challenge involves a complex series of ledges and climbing passages to reach Cala Sisine. One last rappel brings us to the beach, where we relax before a boat ride back to Santa Maria Navarrese for our final B&B stay and farewell dinner.
