Climb the Zinalrothorn
I meet James and John in Zermatt, just enough time for a coffee and we are already walking along the 5 hours that separate us from the Rothornhutte Refuge.
The high pressure looms over all the alps, it is full summer and the milky way that you can see after dinner from the refuge is something very incredible. A crazy show!
The goal of these three days was to climb the Zinalrothorn (4221m), a spectacular 4000 sharp like a shark delta overlooking Zermatt, in front of the wonderful North face of the Matterhorn.
Before climbing it we decide to acclimatise by climbing the Wellenkuppe (3903m) along a beautiful rocky ridge with a spectacular view of the Matterhorn. Sun, not even a cloud, hot but not too hot and James and John who are in good shape… What more could I ask for!!!
For the Zinalrothorn the alarm clock is at 4 after the usual bad swiss coffee and two rusks with the walnut it takes more than an hour and a half walking in the dark before starting to see something. Fortunately, the track of who has passed before was clearly visible and the access couloir becomes easy and evident to reach. The first rays of sun reached us when we were already high on the ridge and at 9 o’clock we were already at the top to admire the show ready for the 2600 meters of descent to return to Zermatt.
A truly fantastic ride!!!
shame about the 13 francs of a 1.5 liter bottle of water
An afternoon break and we set off towards Dent Blanche…
