Selvaggio Blu Extreme: Sardinia’s most spectacular trek

Selvaggio Blu Extreme: The Ultimate Version

For over 12 years, I’ve been hiking the Selvaggio Blu, one of Europe’s most famous and fascinating treks, extensively. Over the years, I’ve explored variations, alternative routes, crossings, and little-known connections. After many attempts, I can say that this is probably the most complete, spectacular, and adventurous version you can experience along what I consider the most beautiful coastline in the world.

The Selvaggio Blu Extreme, a unique version of the classic trek, unfolds from north to south, unlike the traditional route. A journey that combines wild canyons, via ferratas, abseils, caves, ledges suspended over the sea, and some of Sardinia’s most beautiful beaches.

Day One: From the Supramonte of Baunei to Cala Sisine

The adventure begins inland, in the Supramonte of Baunei, at almost 1,000 meters above sea level in a place called Margin. From here, we descend along the wild Bacu S’Orrargiu trail, parallel to the more famous S’Istrada Longa trail.

The setting is immediately grandiose and remote. After the descent, we reach the panoramic viewpoint above the magnificent natural arch of S’Arcada Manna, one of the hidden wonders of the eastern coast of Sardinia.

From here, one of the most powerful emotions of the entire trek begins: a spectacular 100-meter descent into the void that drops us to the bottom of the canyon. We then hike the entire bacu to reach Cala Sisine, in a rugged, isolated, and incredibly evocative setting.

The day ends in the best possible way: at Cala Sisine, Giovanni welcomes us with a memorable dinner of fresh fish.

Day Two: The Plumare Via Ferrata and the Descent to Biriala

After a splendid sunrise over the sea, we leave Cala Sisine and tackle the steep scree slopes that rise above the beach.

We reach the spectacular ledge that crosses the Plumare massif halfway up the face. Here we climb the famous Plumare Via Ferrata, one of the most exciting sections of the Selvaggio Blu Extreme.

Two magnificent abseils lead us to the Oronnoro forest, which we cross southward until we reach the extraordinary Biriala descent. This spectacular abseil drops us directly on the beach.

After a well-deserved, refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Orosei, we ascend the classic Biriala trail to Ololbizzi, where we set up camp for the night.

Day Three: Padente, Su Tentorgiu, and the Sa Coa de Monte Josso Ledge

Day three is packed with adventure.

We set out from Padente, tackling its famous abseils and visiting the evocative Su Tentorgiu Cave, where for a few hours we felt more like speleologists than trekkers.

Through exposed sections, easy climbs, and new abseils, we reach one of the most spectacular stretches of the entire route: the extraordinary Sa Coa de Monte Josso Ledge, suspended above Mudaloru.

Here, we proceed almost crawling along the rock, with the intense blue sea over 300 meters below. It’s one of those places that remain etched in the memory forever.

The day continues with technical sections and breathtaking views until it ends at the wonderful Mariolu beach (Ispuligidenie), where we set up camp under a simply indescribable starry sky.

Day Four: Goloritzé and the Su Ledere Via Ferrata

The day begins with what is probably the most beautiful sunrise of the entire trek.

From Mariolu, we reach the Su Ledere Via Ferrata after a spectacular 60-meter abseil suspended above the sea at Cala Goloritzé.

The route alternates exposed sections, scrambling, and the famous “white plaque” crossing, one of the iconic points of the Selvaggio Blu.

Arriving at Goloritzé is always a special experience. A swim in its clear waters allows you to recharge your batteries before the long climb up the steep scree slope that leads to Punta Salinas.

The day ends at the Irbiddossili sheepfold, where Laura and Salvatore welcome us with an extraordinary dinner and the authentic hospitality of the Ogliastra hinterland.

Day Five: Punta Giradili, Pedra Longa, and the Arrival in Santa Maria Navarrese

The final day offers even more unforgettable experiences.

From the sheepfold, we reach the summit of Punta Giradili in about two hours, one of the most beautiful panoramic views in Sardinia. Below us, Pedra Longa appears, a symbol of the Baunei coast.

We descend the famous Scalone di Sos Oggiatros and walk the picturesque Giradili ledge to Forrola and then to Pedra Longa.

Here, a well-deserved beer overlooking the sea is the perfect reward after days of adventure.

The final stretch leads to Santa Maria Navarrese, where the Selvaggio Blu Extreme ends: an extraordinary journey through sea, mountains, pastoral history, and wild nature.

Why choose the Selvaggio Blu Extreme

The Selvaggio Blu Extreme is not simply a variation of classic trekking. It’s a complete experience that combines:

Spectacular descents of up to 100 meters.
Via ferratas and equipped passages.
Panoramic ledges suspended over the sea.
Caves and wild environments.
The most iconic beaches of the Gulf of Orosei.
Overnight stays in unique locations.
A north-to-south itinerary that offers a continuous progression of emotions.
For those seeking the ultimate adventure in Sardinia, this is probably the most intense, technical, and fascinating version of the Selvaggio Blu.

A crossing that, after more than twelve years of exploration, I consider the perfect synthesis of everything that makes this extraordinary corner of the Mediterranean unique.
